Overview

Although most visitors to Ghana first arrive at the coastal capital Accra, the interior is well worth exploring. A day’s drive inland lies Kumasi, the fascinating capital of the renowned Ashanti Kingdom, whose king still holds court every sixth Sunday. Farther north, wildlife lovers are pointed to Mole National Park, which is a great place to see elephants and other wildlife on foot, while the Boabeng-Fiema Sanctuary is home to habituated troops of sacred mona and colobus monkey. Other more remote destinations for wildlife-viewing include the little-known Digya National Park, and the hippo sanctuary at Wechiau. North of Mole, a Sahelian architectural influence can be discerned at such adobe structures as Larabanga and Bole Mosques, the royal palaces at Wa and Paga, and the painted village of Sirigu. A very popular area with energetic travelers is the extensive highland area east of Lake Volta, which offers limitless walking opportunities among lushly forested slopes studded with small community reserves and pretty waterfalls.
