Overview

Rwanda’s safari circuit comprises three contrasting national parks. Best known is Volcanoes National Park in the northwest, which protects the Rwandan slopes of the volcanic Virunga Mountains and their resident mountain gorillas, six groups of which can be tracked daily by tourists. Nyungwe harbors a wealth of forest birds including some 20 species endemic to the Albertine Rift. Completely different, Akagera National Park on the Tanzanian border protects a low-lying mosaic of swamps and savannah inhabited by elephant, buffalo, antelope and several notable birds, including the legendary shoebill. The circuit can be completed over a week from the capital Kigali, and world-class accommodation is now available at all three parks.
