Tanzania

Although Kenya is traditionally the more popular tourist destination, neighboring Tanzania hosts the majority of East Africa's best-known landmarks, a list that includes the world's highest freestanding mountain in the form of Kilimanjaro, the alluring 'spice island' of Zanzibar with its postcard perfect beaches and atmospheric Stone Town, and portions of Africa's three largest lakes, Victoria, Tanganyika and Niassa-Malawi. A superb network of wildlife reserves covers a quarter of Tanzania's surface, collectively protecting 20% of Africa's large mammal biomass. Pride of place goes to the northern circuit's Serengeti-Ngorongoro ecosystem, which hosts an annual migration of two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelles, alongside high concentrations of lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena and various smaller predators. The centerpiece of the under-publicized southern safari circuit is the vast Selous Game Reserve, which supports the world's largest surviving populations of elephant, buffalo and African wild dog. Further west, Mahale Mountains and Gombe Stream National Parks, lapped by the transparent water of Lake Tanganyika, host typical central African forest species, including habituated communities of man's closest relative the chimpanzee.

  2. Ngorongoro Crater
  3. Kilimanjaro

Tanzania Most Overrated

  1. Visitors to the Kilimanjaro region are often disappointed to find the mountain obscured by a veil of cloud. This often lifts at dusk to reveal the snow-capped peak.

When to Visit Tanzania

All seasons have advantages. The Serengeti is best Dec-Jun, with the migration crossing into Kenya Aug-Oct, while the coast and southern reserves should be avoided Mar-May.
