Overview

The Ugandan capital and centuries-old seat of the Buganda monarchy, Kampala is one of Africa’s prettiest cities, sprawling across verdant hills a few miles north of Lake Victoria, the world’s second-largest freshwater body. It is accessed via Entebbe, site of the country’s only international airport, with a lovely lakeshore setting encapsulated by the colonial-era Entebbe Botanical Garden, which supports a wealth of monkeys and birds. Entebbe is the launching point for day or overnight trips to Ngamba Island, site of a forested chimpanzee orphanage established by Jane Goodall.

To the east of Kampala, the sleepy city of Jinja lies at the point where the world’s longest river, the White Nile, exits Lake Victoria. A few miles downstream, Bujagali Falls is the center of East Africa’s adventure sport activity, offering the opportunity to raft and kayak a series of Class Five rapids along the Nile. Other attractions include the lushly forested Ssese Islands, the bird-rich Mabira Forest Reserve, and the remote Mount Elgon National Park, which protects an eminently climbable extinct volcano on the border with Kenya.
