This voluminous mile-wide waterfall arguably ranks among the top five sights anywhere in Africa, and it is also the focal point of an adrenaline sport industry offering activities such as elephant-back safaris, whitewater rafting in the spectacular Zambezi Gorge below the falls, and canoeing trips along the hippo- and bird-rich river above it. Several small wildlife reserves are dotted around Victoria Falls, but the main wildlife draw in the region is Kafue National Park, a vast tract of miombo woodland, interspersed with various rivers and grassy floodplains, and inhabited by large numbers of elephant, lion, cheetah and large grazers. The more remote Liuwa Plain National Park is the host to one of the continent’s last great wildlife migrations, involving tens of thousands of wildebeest, zebra and other ungulates. Nearby, the Lozi people of Barotseland, one of the last intact African kingdoms, host their spectacular migration every February/March when the entire population boats from the Zambezi floodplain to higher ground.
