Shanghai is China's, and perhaps the world's, city of the future, a boomtown that is pushing the limits of glitz. Places to stroll and stroll again start at the Bund and the Bund Promenade; spill over into Old Town with its traditional shops, picture-perfect tea house, and superb classical garden, Yu Yuan; and stream westward into the French Concession, inundated with colonial mansions, boutiques, trendy bars, and fine international and Chinese cafes. Nanjing Road's pedestrian mile has colonial architecture as well, along with modern shopping malls. A cruise on the Pujiang River offers a fascinating break. Eat and shop at upscale Xintiandi, the nearby Dongtai Antiques Market, along the renovated Bund, and throughout the French Concession. On the east side of the river, in Pudong, the new Shanghai is in full flower with its skyscrapers and the Pearl of the Orient TV Tower, affording a full vista of new and old China on a grand scale. Expo 2010 has focused new attention on Shanghai as China's showcase destination and brought a new boom in upscale development along the Bund and the Pudong riverside.
