A city 2,000 years old, Chengdu was historically near the center of events due to its proximity to Xi’an – where the Han civilization flourished – and also benefited from its location at the center of the Sichuan basin, which is the most fertile part of China. A city 2,000 years old, Chengdu was historically near the center of events due to its proximity to Xi’an – where the Han civilization flourished – and also benefited from its location at the center of the Sichuan basin, which is the most fertile part of China. It’s thanks to that lushness and optimal climate that Chengdu gave rise to China’s most famous food trends: Sichuan cuisine, which is the most varied cuisine in the world, and the culture of tea drinking, which arose in Chengdu. The city today is the commercial hub of western China as well as one of China’s three liveliest cities in terms of restaurants, entertainment, and nightlife. Although it only has a handful of conventional sights, the city’s allure is in the manifestation of its cultural flourishes: a great array of teahouses where you can taste the world’s best brews, restaurants that serve Sichuan’s best dishes, Sichuan opera, and some great bars. There is also Sichuan’s famously laid-back way of life: people not only take it easy, they are also outgoing and friendly. And, despite its massive size (with a population of 12 million), Chengdu is manageable thanks to well-planned tree-lined roads, wide pavements, and excellent public transport.
