Maharashtra's second city is best known for its association with two of southern India's most famous characters, the 17th century Maratha leader Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and Osho, the so-called "sex guru," whose vast ashram dominates the northern suburbs. Thousands of devotees come here every year to study meditation at the Osho Meditation Resort and attend yoga training at the famous Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute. Pune also played a significant role in the struggle for India Independence — Gandhi was imprisoned here for two years by the British after delivering his "Quit India" ultimatum in 1942. Commerce and education are the other big draws — Pune is a major center for automobile manufacturing and information technology, with numerous technical academies and training centers. For casual sightseers, the city boasts excellent restaurants, historic ruins, and some interesting and quirky museums. The Pataleshvara Cave Temple has been in use since at least the 8th century, and more recent ruins of forts and palaces are scattered around the city.
