Serious historians have postulated that the pirate Captain Kidd buried his treasure on this island. Serious gourmets postulate that the best nouc mam in the nation is made here. We postulate that this is one of the best kept secrets in tourism. Until recently a backwater and a military reserve, it will soon be the next new thing, so get there now. Fortunately, 70 percent of the island is national park territory, so development shouldn't get out of hand. And currently, on slow days, you can have the whole beach to yourself. In addition to lolling on the beach and frolicking in the gentle surf, you can hike to the park's fresh water springs for a dip. The folks who make the nouc mam are happy to receive visitors, so you can see how the sine qua non of Vietnamese cookery is made. And next to that is a black pepper plantation that produces a pepper so mild and sweet that you could put it on vanilla ice cream. Really! If you're a scuba diver you'll find good viz in winter and spring. Snorkeling is good most of the time, as is kayaking. If shopping is your drug of choice, it's pearls you want to look for. They are farmed on the west side of the island. And if you want a bang-up seafood dinner, just follow your nose.
