Solomon Islands is one of the least developed South Pacific countries with around 80 percent of the population still living a subsistence lifestyle in rural villages. Most (but not all) Solomon Islanders were converted to Christianity over a century ago and this was a British colony until 1978. In recent years Solomon Islands has been plagued by official corruption and ethnic conflicts fueled by outside interests exploiting the country's rainforests, minerals, and fish. Things are peaceful at present but caution must be exercised when visiting custom areas controlled by local tribes. This situation and the general lack of tourist infrastructure makes Solomon Islands an adventure travel destination. The dusty capital Honiara has numerous monuments and relics dating back to World War Two when Guadalcanal was a major battleground. Western Solomons Province, especially Gizo and Munda, is the most attractive area for visitors with excellent scuba diving and lovely scenery. Ships sailing between Honiara and Gizo pass through the Marovo Lagoon, a prime destination for divers and kayakers. Liveaboard dive boats based in Honiara carry scuba divers to outlying reefs.
