Auckland is also known as the "City Of Sails" and owes its character to the oceans that lap at its eastern and western fringes. The sea provides New Zealand's largest city with glorious harbor views, snug beaches and a home for flotillas of yachts and other boats. A nautical theme infuses much of Auckland, from various maritime museums to the seafood adorning plates on Princes Wharf. A significant exception is the Sky Tower, where visitors are challenged to overcome gravity via a base jump, and to enjoy exceptional views of this picturesque city. At the wonderful Auckland Museum, it's traditional Maori culture that takes center stage, making a lasting impression on visitors with vivacious song-and-dance performances and intimidating artifacts such as war canoes. Ferries criss-cross Waitemata Harbor between Auckland's city center and the suburb of Devonport, with its quaint shops and a pair of (non-active) volcanic cones that make for a brief but exhilarating climb.
