Prior to being crowned Brazil’s most perennially fashionable beach getaway, Armação dos Búzios was a secluded fishing village two hours north of Rio de Janeiro. Since then, Búzios – by which Armação and the surrounding peninsula of two dozen idyllic beaches came to be known – has become an obligatory stop for jetsetters in search of a tropical version of Bardot’s other “discovery”: Saint Tropez. Sophisticated trappings – from designer boutiques and hotels to swanky restaurants and nightclubs – mean that Búzios is one of the most expensive, and sceney, beach destinations in Brazil. However, in the off-season, when crowds, high prices and the throb of electronica recede, you can take full advantage of some of the loveliest beaches this side of paradise.
