Where the Río Biobío meets the Pacific Ocean, Concepción is a modern city which, with its nearby port of Talcahuano and adjacent suburbs, has roughly half a million people. While it dates from colonial times, it owes its modernity in part to the earthquakes and tsunamis that have battered and flooded it, most recently in February of 2010. Concepción is a commercial city, thanks to its port and the region’s forest plantations, but its manufacturing base has declined and the former coal-mining industry has disappeared. At the same time, it's one of Chile’s intellectual centers, with three major universities and many foreign exchange students; thanks to those institutions, it also has a critical mass of museums and galleries, particularly strong in figurative art. The coast north and south of the city is popular for beach-going, but draws mainly a regional rather than a national or international clientele. In the interior there is a nascent wine-growing region.
