It's called the "City of Eternal Spring," and for good reason. Medellín's year-round warm climate keeps flowers in bloom, the mountains green and the locals in a state of near perennial bliss. As a result, Medellín is one of friendliest cities in Colombia and a great place for strolling and interacting with locals. It's become popular with overland travelers looking for a place to chill out for a while and take Spanish language lessons. Medellín is renowned for its lively arts community, cultural scene and progressive attitudes, thanks in part to a large student population. The city's wealth grew on the back of drug exports in the 1980s but the economy has since diversified to include cut flowers and textiles. The pleasant weather and young population contributes to a dazzling nightlife and there is no shortage of discos and salsa clubs. Foodies will also enjoy a great dining scene, ranging from cheap street food to expertly crafted international cuisine. Medellín has fewer historical sights and museums than Bogotá, but there is enough to keep you busy for a couple of days, plus some interesting sights in the surrounding countryside, known as Antioquia.
