Overview

Nosara, mid-way down the Pacific coast of Costa Rica's Nicoya peninsula, is a nirvana to surfers, backpackers, and escape artists seeking a no-frills, down-to-earth piece of paradise. Backed by by hills clad with luxuriant vegetation, this unspoiled area is famous for its magnificent beaches, wildlife, and adventure activities, from surfing and quad tours to ultralight flights. Nosara is a twofer. The "touristed" area, called Beaches of Nosara, backs the beaches of Playa Pelada and ruler-straight, miles-long Playa Guiones. Tucked along a maze of unpaved lanes are innumerable B&Bs, hotels, surf camps, and restaurants, none of which rise above the trees. Hence, say hello to the monkeys, anteaters, sloths and other critters that hang out in Nosara's forests. It's easy to do at Nosara Biological Reserve. Be sure to also check out Playa Ostional (a short drive north of Nosara), where Ridley turtles haul ashore in their thousands to lay eggs — a stupendous sight! Inland, the hamlet of Nosara Pueblo (Bocas de Nosara) is populated by Costa Ricans and lets you sample the traditional local lifestyle. Don't fail to thrill to a bird's-eye view of the area with Flying Crocodile.
