Shoppers will love the huge National Craft Market, while art lovers enjoy the contemporary local works at the Art Museum of El Salvador (MARTE). The David Guzman National Anthropology Museum exhibits cultural artifacts from throughout the country’s history. San Salvador’s nightlife is legendary, from the swanky clubs and discos of the Zona Rosa to the more Bohemian scene on the Calle San Antonio Abad. As in any Central American capital, the contrast between rich and poor can be a bit of a shock. Opulent megamalls and a full complement of American fast-food chains overlook the corrugated metal roofs of sprawling shantytowns. Popular day trips include the archaeological site of San Andrés and the San Salvador volcano.
