Overview

This region has idyllic Caribbean beaches and several fascinating and easily visited nature reserves. The town of La Ceiba is the transport hub, with a small airport and regular ferry service to the Bay Islands. Nightlife here is wild, but most of the attractions lie outside of town. The town of La Ceiba is the transport hub, with a small airport and regular ferry service to the Bay Islands. Nightlife here is wild, but most of the attractions lie outside of town. Pico Bonito National Park is a vast expanse of mountains and rain forest. There are several splendid jungle lodges in the area. Whitewater rafting and kayaking on the Cangrejal River are world-class. To the west, beachfront resorts cluster around Tela. A boat trip through Jeanette Kawas National Park or Punta Izopo Wildlife Refuge gives you a look at the coastal ecosystems. Lancetilla Botanical Gardens is the largest botanical garden in Central America. All of these parks are heavenly for birders. Farther west is Omoa, a tiny beach village beloved by low-budget travelers. To the east, Trujillo has a Spanish fortress, excellent beaches and access to the unspoiled Capiro y Calentura National Park. The welcoming Garífuna people live in beachfront villages throughout the region, and welcome visitors for an evening of grilled fish and traditional drumming.
