Honduras's capital is her most pleasant city, with splendid Colonial architecture and the country's best museums. Thanks to the mountain location, the climate is near perfect year-round. The selection of upscale hotels and dining is good. However, as in any big city in the developing world, the gap between rich and poor can be shocking. Modern shopping malls contrast with sprawling shantytowns. Honduras has an amazing number of good painters, and you can see their work at the National Art Gallery, Museum of the Honduran Man and Arturo Medrano Art Gallery. Also visit two ornate Colonial churches, the twin-towered San Miguel and the 16th-century San Francisco. On a hill overlooking the city is El Picacho Cristo, a 65-foot high statue of Christ. For an authentic Honduran shopping experience, visit the San Isidro Market, but be careful! Nine miles to the north, La Tigra National Park offers a nice network of trails through luxuriant cloud forest alive with birds and animals. It's one of the country's easiest parks to visit. If you love handicrafts, or if you want a scenic drive through the mountains, visit the villages of Santa Lucia, Valle de Ángeles and San Juancito.
