Overview

Angel Falls is the highest waterfall in the world. It has a total height of 3,212 feet and an uninterrupted drop of 2,648 feet, more than 16 times the height of Niagara Falls. The waterfall spills off Auyantepui ("Mountain of the God of Evil" in the local Pemón tongue), one of the many flat-topped mountains in the area, and falls into Cañon del Diablo (Devil's Canyon). The falls lie in a remote region inaccessible by road. Most tourists fly into Canaima and take a light plane or boat tour to the falls. The falls are part of 11,600-square-mile Canaima National Park, the second largest national park in Venezuela, and the only one appearing on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The journey to get to the falls is definitely part of the attraction itself. The water volume at the falls varies widely between the rainy season and the dry; the best time to go is generally considered to be during the rainy season, between June and November. Fun fact: Angel Falls is named not after the cherubim and seraphim of the Bible but rather after American bush pilot Jimmy Angel, whose four-seater airplane crashed on the top of the falls in 1937. He was looking for gold.
