Overview
Sometimes called the Serengeti of Venezuela, Los Llanos ("The Plains") is an immense, treeless wetland that's one of the best places in the world for wildlife-watching. Sometimes called the Serengeti of Venezuela, Los Llanos ("The Plains") is an immense, treeless wetland that's one of the best places in the world for wildlife-watching. Jaguars stalk this flat land, as do giant anteaters; the rivers are full of caimans and in the wet season the lucky traveler might spot rose-colored freshwater river dolphins. During the dry season, the bird-watching is the best in the world — enormous flocks of bright pink scarlet ibis can be seen descending on the rapidly-diminishing waterholes. Venezuela boasts more than 360 indigenous bird species, and there are few spots better suited for viewing them. There are two main options for visiting Los Llanos: stay at one of the hatos, or large ranches that double as tourist resorts, or take a budget, more backpacker-style tour that stays in more rustic conditions in thatched huts, sleeping in hammocks. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to April, when the wildlife is more concentrated. Whenever you go on safari here, though, you won't be disappointed.
