The “Land of Many Waters” (its indigenous name) lies between the cities of Puerto La Cruz (Anzoátegui state) and Cumaná (Sucre). It was declared a national park in 1973, but with various communities (Mochima itself, Santa Fe, Playa Colorada) and now a new highway within its boundaries. Most of the lodging is laid-back, but there are some upmarket places that cater to honeymooners and those seeking a bit of pampering. Dive resorts offer live-in courses and many posadas take guests on boat trips to remote beaches and islands. Public boat services sail from Puerto La Cruz, Mochima and Santa Fe. When you go out for the day, make sure you know when the boatman will pick you up. Inshore there are opportunities for hiking, cycling, rafting, or taking a trip to the historic center of Cumaná.
