Munich

Big, bright, boisterous and beautiful, Munich is hard not to love, with its Baroque flourishes, lively nightlife and Bavarian traditions. A vibrant calendar of opera, concerts and music festivals, more than a dozen art museums and a clutch of royal palaces round out its cultural life, and the Oktoberfest is among Europe's most-visited events. In summer, locals gather in neighborhood beer gardens as they have for generations. The city is filled with parks and gardens, with one of the loveliest surrounding the summer palace at Nymphenburg. It and the in-town Residenz are must-see sights, as are the rococo Asamkirche and the baroque Peterskirche. Get a bird's-eye view from either the top of Frauenkirche or the Rathaus tower, and stop in the Victualienmarkt for a morning snack of weisswurst and a pretzel before watching the animated Glockenspiel clock perform at noon. Smart shops and restaurants fill the five courtyards of Funf Hofe, a brilliant marriage of historic and modern architecture.
