The Blue Rider School of Expressionist painting was born in this idyllic town on the Staffelsee in the years before World War II. Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Franz Marc and several others took their inspiration from the vivid colors of the Bavarian landscape and the unusually luminous atmosphere of this area between snow-capped Zugspitz and Europe’s largest protected moorland. Their paintings defied the rigid rules of the academic artists, who never left their studios to paint in the open air, and who could not understand the unusual color choices or the bold, flat images that made no pretense of perspective. In this very traditional-looking Bavarian town where they lived and painted, visitors can see the home of Kandinsky and the scenes he painted. An exhibit in the Schlossmuseum, where an excellent collection of their work is shown, has paintings arranged near windows to show the exact set of buildings and rooftops the artist used as a model. Murnau is filled with earlier art as well. The pastel buildings along its main street are painted with Liuftel Mallerei – the lively frescoes popular in lower Bavaria. St. Nicholas Church, built for pilgrimages, has an ornately carved altar and a wall of primitive votive paintings showing Murnau’s marketplace and streets as they once looked.
