One of Germany’s best preserved Medieval cities, Regensburg has a small, walkable old town, at the center of which are the beautiful Alte Kappel and St. Peter’s Cathedral, famous for its stained glass windows and the original 12th-century Romanesque choir. The Niedermünster was a convent for noblewomen, and nearby is the Roman Porta Praetoria, built under Marcus Aurelius in 179 AD. It was so hidden inside other buildings that it was only discovered in 1885. Wahlenstrasse, a fashionable street of homes built by Medieval merchants, still has four of its original towers. Around the Haidplatz is one of the city’s oldest and most picturesque ensembles of buildings, including a Medieval pilgrims’ hostel. The Old Rathaus houses the Tourist Information Office, and beyond is a house on Goliathstrasse with a giant fresco of Goliath. Stone Bridge was built in 1135-46, once the only entrance to the city and next to it is an old salt storage building with displays about the bridge and salt trade. At Neupfarrplatz, a memorial in the pavement was created from the foundations of the synagogue that was the heart of the Old Ghetto. Here Document Neupfarrplatz is an underground museum of the remains of Roman buildings.
