Overview

From Würzburg to Füssen and Reutte (just over the border in Austria), the Romantic Road winds through some of Germany’s prettiest old villages, past hilltop castles, across rolling farmlands and ending right at the foot of the Alps. Along its route the towns change from the Medieval half-timbered buildings (called fachwerk) to the bright Bavarian houses with stucco walls covered in frescoes. Whatever the style, these towns are at their loveliest covered in snow. The best preserved medieval town in Germany, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is especially beautiful in December, when the entire town becomes an outdoor Christmas Market.

For winter sports, the best part of the Romantic Road is at its southern end, where the Alpine ski areas around Reutte and Pfronten are outstanding. The main ski area at Reutte is Hahnenkamm mountain, about two miles from the village of Lechaschau. The Seilbahn station at the base of the mountain leads to lifts that include cabin tramways, double-chair and ground lifts. Although some runs are as much as a mile and a half long and the mountain has some death-defying vertical drops (and the world’s most difficult ski course, the Streif), beginners find plenty of terrain here. A restaurant with a sun terrace awaits at the top. The 6,000-foot high Breitenberg offers beautiful downhill slopes where the Women's World Cup for downhill skiing and giant slalom were held, but its terrain primarily offers skiing for the whole family, with nearly half suitable for beginners.
