Tübingen, in the Schwabian Alb, is one of the more ancient of German cities, located on the upper reaches of the Neckar River. It is the home of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (1477), whose namesake was better known as Eberhard the Bearded. The school is best known for its schools of law, medicine and theology. In the 19th century the town fathers built an island and park, the Neckarinsel, in the river, which is a beautiful place to view the picturesque old town that rises from the north side of the riverbank with houses built along the line of the old town walls. From the riverbank, winding stone-paved streets rise to the top of the hill and the Stiftskirche, built contemporaneously with the University. At the far end of the high point of land the Höhentübingen Castle, from the 11th century but mostly of 17th-century style, is now part of the University. The marvelous 15th-century Town Hall was given a face lift in 1877 for the University’s 400th anniversary, the origins of its unique and historic graffiti paintings. A wonderful contemporary statue of two men arguing is down the alley to the right, commenting on town and gown relationships. A school town, this half-timbered gem survived World War II unscathed. Wander the streets and find the Judenstrasse (15th-century Jewish section), go to the lower level of Neckarmüller Gasthausbrauerei for a weissebier and brauereibraten Schwabisher style.
