Even if Wittenberg did not have such historical importance, the town on the banks of the Elbe River would be well worth visiting for its charming old town filled with fine homes and highlighted by one of the finest market squares in Germany. In the Renaissance town hall is an excellent collection of ecclesiastical art from the 20th century. But it is Martin Luther who gave Wittenberg its immortality. The leader of the Protestant Reformation lived here, married here and nailed to the door of the Castle Church in 1517 the document that would forever change Christendom. The original door was replaced with a bronze one in the 1800s, as a permanent monument to Luther and his work. His house sheds more light on this theologian, his everyday life and his times. Less well known is Luther’s contemporary, the artist Lucas Cranach the Elder, whose masterpiece decorates the high altar of St. Mary’s Church. The Cranach Courtyards follow the story of his life. St. Mary’s church, where Luther preached, is Wittenberg’s oldest building, and along with the Castle Church and Market Square makes up the town’s trio of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Skip ahead a few centuries to visit the House of History in Wittenberg, Germany’s only museum chronicling family life during the half century of the GDR, complete with typical living rooms from each decade.
