Overview

Delphi is arguably the greatest archaeological site in Greece, outside of Athens, and if you are in the Greek capital for a few days this should definitely be your first choice for a day trip. It was the most sacred site in the Greek world, and pilgrims came for thousands of years, from as far back as about 1600BC. Delphi is arguably the greatest archaeological site in Greece, outside of Athens, and if you are in the Greek capital for a few days this should definitely be your first choice for a day trip. The location alone is impressive, the site being high at the head of a valley below Mount Parnassos, with swirls of olive trees sweeping away below it to the Gulf of Corinth. It was the most sacred site in the Greek world, and pilgrims came for thousands of years, from as far back as about 1600BC. They came both to worship the God Apollo, and to consult the Delphic Oracle, who would answer the pilgrim’s questions. The Oracle was always a woman aged over 50, and her answers were often cleverly ambiguous. Apart from the remains of the Temple of Apollo, other highlights include the Theatre, the Treasury of the Athenians, and the Sacred Way up which the pilgrims walked. The site covers a large area, on both sides of the road, and the Archaeological museum is not to be missed.
