Overview

Skýros is by far the largest of the Sporades islands, but has the smallest population of any of them. It is almost five times the size of Skiáthos, yet has less than half its population. Skýros is by far the largest of the Sporades islands, but has the smallest population of any of them. It is almost five times the size of Skiáthos, yet has less than half its population. It has remained one of the most traditional of all of the Greek islands, as you would see if you were able to visit in the month prior to Lent, when the Skýros Carnival is in full swing, and in particular the traditional ancient Skýros Goat Dance. The island is also known as being the burial place of the British poet Rupert Brookes, who fought in the Greek War of Independence and died off-shore on a hospital ship. A visit to see his grave in the extreme south of the island will introduce visitors to the more rugged side of Skýros. The north is more fertile, with a variety of crops grown, and the pine forests so typical of the Sporades. The capital, Skýros Town, also known as Hóra, is a beautiful place with a handful of museums and dazzling white houses, more typical of the Cyclades.
