County Wexford, in the southeast corner of Ireland, is the country's sunniest region. Its coastline ranges from long, sandy beaches, dunes, and small coves to broad bays and river estuaries that are a haven for wildlife. There are colorful harbors and fishing villages to explore, and seaside resorts offering a wealth of watersports. Rosslare Europort is a major ferry terminal. Founded by the Vikings, Wexford is an atmospheric town with historic buildings and churches, winding streets and attractive quays. It holds a famous Opera Festival in October. The mudflats north of the harbor form the Wexford Wildfowl Reserve, winter home to thousands of migratory birds. The delightful Irish National Heritage Park traces Irish history along a trail of reconstructed buildings. New Ross, on the River Barrow, is one of County Wexford's oldest port towns. The Dunbrody Famine Ship tells the story of Irish emigrants who set sail to America from here, including John F. Kennedy's ancestors, whose family homestead is nearby. Kilmore Quay, with its whitewashed, thatched cottages, and the Hook Peninsula with its ancient lighthouse, are other Wexford highlights.
