Overview

Limerick is Ireland's fourth-largest city and its western gateway for international visitors. Even older is St. Mary's Cathedral, built in 1172, with beautifully carved miserichords. St. John's Cathedral, with Ireland's tallest spire, is another of the city's many beautiful churches. Limerick has several fine museums, including the Hunt Museum with its outstanding collection of art and antiquities, the Limerick City Museum with fascinating local history, and Limerick City Gallery of Art. The Milk Market is a magnet for foodies. The surrounding Shannon region has many more attractions, from Foynes Flying Boat Museum to the picturesque thatched cottages at Adare. There are fine reconstructions of Celtic dwellings at Craggaunowen, and real prehistoric sites at Lough Gur.
