The Northwest, comprising the counties of Donegal and Sligo, is Yeats Country and home to some of Ireland's most haunting, dreamy landscape. William Butler Yeats and his brother the painter Jack Butler Yeats grew up in Sligo and drew their inspiration from the flat-topped mountain Ben Bulben draped in gorse and heather, and the quickly changing weather that alters moods many times a day. W.B. Yeats is buried in a simple grave in a Protestant church cemetery in Drumcliff that the poet's devotees can visit without fanfare or fee. Sligo Town is a lively city of pubs, restaurants, and traditional music and adds a healthy spice to an otherwise quiet rural region. Donegal's Derryveagh Mountains will induce even the most hard-hearted of souls to dream of more spiritual things with their soaring hills and silver streams winding through gorse and sheep pastures. On their edge nestles Glenveagh National Park, an extensive wilderness of lakes, forests, and moors with fairy tale Glenveagh Castle famous for being the sometime sanctuary for Greta Garbo on the shores of Lough Beagh. The park, and the castle grounds, are well worth exploring. Equally so is Malin Head, the northernmost point in Ireland, where the winds blow past the headland and its ruined Napoleonic signal tower while hiking trails wind along the bluffs.
