The beauty and serenity of Italy's Lake District has inspired poets, writers, and artists for centuries. The beauty and serenity of Italy's Lake District has inspired poets, writers, and artists for centuries. Goethe, Hemingway, Lord Byron, Verdi, and even George Lucas have incorporated the Lake District's grandeur of beautiful gardens, elegant villas, azure waters, and snow-capped mountains into romantic works. Regular visitors will be equally impressed with the region's natural beauty as well as the artfully constructed villas, hotels, and gardens that dot the edges of the lakes. It's a popular area to relax for a week in an old-time hotel, luxuriate on a beach, take a nature walk or a boat ride. Active visitors can take advantage of windsurfing, kayaking, and hiking through the forests.

Lake Como to the west, and Garda to the east, are the primary destinations. Como is the historical choice, with the most elegant villas and gardens, including those in beautiful Bellagio. Garda, a larger lake, offers excellent windsurfing, sailing, and more laidback waterside resorts. Lake Maggiore with the Borromean Islands is also well worth a visit; stop in Stresa for fresh fish and a stroll on the promenade.
