Delft is an ideal day trip from most of Holland. The home of Vermeer, it is easy to reach from most parts of the country. (The Hague and Rotterdam are both 15 minutes by train.) Visitors enjoy a few hours spent walking the narrow canals and unchanged-since-the-17th-century streets. It's as compact and finely detailed as one of Vermeer's paintings and you can still find the site where he painted his famous "View of Delft." Although none of the master's few surviving works are now in Delft (The Hague's Mauritshuis is the closest location with originals), the excellent Vermeer Centre has reproductions of all his paintings and has good displays putting his life and work in Delft into context. Besides Vermeer fans, Delft also draws fans of the namesake Delftware china. You can see the famous blue and white goods being created at workshops in and around town, although much of the cheap stuff sold in souvenir shops is actually from China(!). Although most visitors are just in for a few hours, savvy travelers have discovered the evocative charms of Delft by night and use one its many hotels near the train station as a base for day trips to other Dutch cities.
