Overview

Beautiful Bergen may be best known for its atmospheric medieval merchant's quarter of Bryggen, an atmospheric warren of ramshackle wooden buildings and narrow lanes now housing craft and souvenir shops, but it's also home to some of Scandinavia's best seafood, sold daily at the lively waterfront market. This is the place to head if you're on a tight budget or want evidence that Scandinavia doesn't have to be expensive — for just a few euros you can buy enormous fresh shrimp salad rolls and mixed seafood salads. This is the place to head if you're on a tight budget or want evidence that Scandinavia doesn't have to be expensive — for just a few euros you can buy enormous fresh shrimp salad rolls and mixed seafood salads. The market is also the spot to shop for Viking souvenirs and soft woolen sweaters, mittens and scarves. While you'll find yourself wanting to linger around the city's splendid harbor, the old quarter with its charming cobblestone streets and pastel-painted buildings is worth a stroll, and there are plenty of excellent museums to occupy your time. An artistic hot-spot and European Capital of Culture in 2000, Bergen boasts a vibrant year-round program of exhibitions and performances (the Bergen Philharmonic is a must-see), but summer sees its cultural calendar crammed with concerts and festivals.
