Everybody loves Bled and it’s immediately apparent why. How can you possibly go wrong with views of an emerald-green lake from every direction? Add to that a tiny island in the center with a medieval church, a Gothic castle looming from the rocky cliff above, and some of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps soaring behind. Bled literally has something for everyone – from some of the best hotels and hostels in Slovenia to excellent restaurants, pubs and bars. In recent years it has also become the center of adventure sports – rafting, canyoning, kayaking, paragliding and skydiving – and they are available from April to October from outfits scattered throughout town. But Bled’s beauty and attractions are not unknown and – unsurprisingly – at the height of the season it can be overpriced and swarming with tourists. Then its time to head for the hills — in this case the Julian Alps, with 84,000-hectare Triglav National Park as its centerpiece. Triglav, at 2864 meters (9396 feet) the nation’s highest peak, has almost a spiritual attraction for Slovenes and you should not miss the opportunity to climb "Three Heads," which easily can be done in two days with an overnight at one of the mountain lodges.
