Ljubljana, whose name almost means “beloved” (ljubljena), is Slovenia’s largest city and its capital. Ljubljana, whose name almost means “beloved” (ljubljena), is Slovenia’s largest city and its capital. But it can sometimes feel more like a self-contented provincial town than a place of national import, especially in summer when café tables and music fill the narrow streets of the Old Town. Lying on the right (east) bank of the small but perfectly formed Ljubljanica River, the Old Town is a treasure trove of medieval architecture, but you’ll also find a lot of baroque buildings and 20th-century ones, including the unique Central Market, designed by Jože Plečnik, a local architect whose unique and eclectic style defies easy definition. Standing guard over the Old Town from atop a wooded hill is Ljubljana Castle. A couple of museums up here will guide you through the history of the city and the nation via multimedia exhibits, but the lion’s share of the city’s museums and galleries is on the left (west) side of the river in a district called Center. Here, too, you’ll find Park Tivoli, offering a host of outdoor activities.
