Overview
This region within the canton Graubunden has its own distinctive culture, architecture and even a language: Rhaeto-Romansch. The Upper Engadin is home to the world-famous St. Moritz, winter hangout of the rich and famous, as well as the smaller resorts Samedan and Pontresina. There's horse racing on the frozen lake, furs and diamonds on display in the exclusive shops, and gourmet dining at the luxury hotels. This is one of Switzerland's largest and highest ski areas, with 56 lifts and 350 km of slopes. There are also excellent cross-country tracks and, for the adventurous, an Olympic bobsled run. St. Moritz is the terminus for two of the world’s most celebrated train rides, the Bernina Express and the Glacier Express. Both are breathtaking journeys over the lofty Alpine passes. Beyond the spectacular Maloja Pass lies the Italian-speaking Bregaglia region and the postcard-perfect village of Soglio. In the Lower Engadin, you’ll find the vast Swiss National Park. The rustic, pastel-shaded masonry of the Engadiner architectural style is on display in villages like Scuol, the home of famous thermal baths. Nearby is the magnificent Castle Tarasp.
