In a country filled with spectacular scenery, this region stands out. The lake, the mountains, the vineyards and villages have stolen many a seasoned traveler’s heart. At the eastern end of Lake Geneva, this is one of Switzerland’s major wine-growing regions, and the mountains are only minutes away. Classy Montreux is the site of the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival every July. Chateau Chillon, one of the most photographed spots in Switzerland, is a classic 11th-century castle that commands a narrow road between lake and mountains. From the chateau through Montreux runs the waterfront Quai de Fleurs, one of the most beautiful walks in Europe. Nearby Vevey is less ritzy, but also has a lovely lake promenade and several small museums. The family will like the Food Museum and the Games Museum. A boat ride on the lake, perhaps to Lausanne or to Evian in France, is a must-do. The steep lakefront vineyards are so picturesque that they have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you can walk or bike among the grapes to Lausanne and beyond, stopping in quaint villages such as Epesses and St. Saphorin for lake fish and local white wine.
