There are many fine hotels, some with the boxy balconies that recall their past as sanitaria, where tuberculosis patients took the local “Champagne air.” Stroll the High Promenade for a birds-eye view of the town, or catch a hockey game at Europe’s largest wooden stadium. In case of bad weather, visit the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Museum, an excellent collection of paintings by the famous expressionist. Klosters, named for its 13th-century monastery, is smaller and a bit more elegant than Davos, and offers similar opportunities for winter sports.
