Overview
The Jura region extends from Geneva to Basel, straddling the border between Switzerland and France. Elsewhere, the seven ridges of the Jura might be considered a major mountain range, but here they are overshadowed by the far loftier Alps to the south. The region has no large cities or major resorts. There is a bit of skiing, but winters here are colder and less sunny than in the Alpine resorts. Summer is the best time to visit, for wonderful hiking, scenic drives and visits to the many picturesque villages. The region has no large cities or major resorts. There is a bit of skiing, but winters here are colder and less sunny than in the Alpine resorts. Summer is the best time to visit, for wonderful hiking, scenic drives and visits to the many picturesque villages. This is the center of the Swiss watchmaking industry, which originated in the 19th century as a way for farmers’ wives to earn money over the long winters. Rolex, Cartier, Movado and other famous firms have their headquarters here. The International Watchmaking Museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds is a must for anyone interested in “high mech.” Le Locle is another watchmaking center. Horse fanciers will also love the region, where wild horses still roam. The yearly race at Saignelégier is world-famous.
