The rail and road route from the north runs through Bellinzona, whose three medieval castles are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Lugano, Ticino’s largest city, is a center for business travelers from Milan, only an hour away. Its lakeside location gives it a Mediterranean feel, and shopping and dining opportunities are world-class. There are several small but fine art museums. Locarno and Ascona, on Lake Maggiore, have the feel of laid-back resort towns, in contrast to Lugano’s urban glamour. Ascona is known as an artists’ community, and Locarno’s film festival every August is second only to that of Cannes. Passenger boats ply the lakes, and offer a splendid way to make a day trip to Italy.
