Overview
Zermatt is one of Switzerland’s most famous destinations, and with good reason. The spectacular mountains make this area a paradise for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hang gliding and all manner of extreme sports. The elevation is so high that it's possible to ski in summer, up on the glacier. This is a major center for climbing, rappelling and related pursuits. The world-famous Matterhorn is an obsession for climbers — many rest in the village cemetery. No private cars are allowed in Zermatt, so take the train for a hassle-free arrival. The peaceful streets and quaint Alpine architecture give the town a fairy-tale atmosphere ...
The peaceful streets and quaint Alpine architecture give the town a fairy-tale atmosphere that even the tour groups, with their single-minded pursuit of Matterhorn souvenirs, can’t spoil. The selection of lodging is huge, from rustic hostels to five-star palaces. The restaurants and bars are pretty lively during the summer season. In case of rain, visit the Alpine Museum or take a walking tour of the village. Nearby Saas Fee is smaller and quieter, but also has fine accommodations and an endless menu of summer activities.
