Overview
Zermatt is one of Switzerland’s most famous destinations, and with good reason. It’s one of the country’s largest ski resorts (after Verbier and St. Moritz) with more than 150 miles of slopes, 75 lifts and a link to the adjacent Cervinia resort in Italy. It’s also one of the highest — you can ski December through April and, up on the glacier, even in summer. The world-famous Matterhorn is an obsession for climbers, many of whom have paid the ultimate price. No private cars are allowed in Zermatt, so take the train for a hassle-free arrival. The peaceful streets and quaint Alpine architecture give the town a fairy-tale atmosphere that even the tour groups, with their single-minded pursuit of Matterhorn souvenirs, can’t spoil. The selection of lodging is huge, from rustic hostels to five-star palaces. In the winter season, the restaurants and bars are quite lively. After a day on the pistes, it’s time for après ski and a hot fondue in a rustic stübli, followed by dancing at The Pink. Nearby Saas Fee is smaller and quieter, but also has great skiing and fine accommodations.
