No other city in Turkey embraces fun-in-the-sun as passionately as Bodrum. It got its start in tourism when writer and political dissident Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı was sent into exile in 1925 in the barely known fishing village and began telling tales of his pleasurable life. Affluent Turks began to "summer" in Bodrum and partied in Gatsby-esque fashion. Bodrum now hosts party animals of every stripe. Halikarnasus open-air disco is in a class by itself, showcasing top musical celebrities and entertainers and extravagant cabaret and laser shows. Bodrum's hip restaurants, bistros and bars are renowned for their worldly cocktails and gourmet cuisine. The Marina Yacht Club represents all that is upwardly mobile and ocean-going, while brand-name designer shops cater to the international yachting fraternity and other dedicated shoppers. Bodrum is the ideal starting point for a cruise on a wooden sailing boat, or gulet. Plan to spend the better part of a day in the 15th-century Crusader castle of St. Peter that lives on as an outstanding museum of underwater archaeology. As the classical Dorian city of Halicarnassus ruled by Mausolus in the 4th century BC, Bodrum gained its famous Mausoleum. Little remains except the overwhelming grandeur. Bodrum also has a 500-year-old Turkish bath, an 18th-century naval dockyard and a 4th-century theater where lions and gladiators faced off. One of Turkey’s most flamboyant transgender singers, Zeki Müren, was a Bodrum resident. His modest house is now a museum and a charming ode to a cultural idol.
