Although extensively remodeled by the Victorians, this iconic castle has been inhabited since the time of William the Conqueror and it still oozes pomp and ceremony. Located just a few miles from Heathrow Airport, the surrounding town feels like an extension of London, and hordes of day-trippers come here to glimpse the glamorous lifestyle of the royals. However, there's more to Windsor than the castle — though the town lost its famous safari park in the 1990s, visitors can still enjoy boat cruises on the Thames, carriage rides through the Royal Landscape park, horse racing at Ascot, tours of famous Eton College, and Legoland, the theme park closest to central London. However, Windsor is a popular stop on the coach tour circuit and the summer crowds can be outrageous.
