Edmonton, Alberta's capital, sits in the center of the province and is the technological, service, and supply center for Alberta’s oil and gas industry. Although its reputation as a boomtown may be its defining characteristic, the proud city has a great variety of cultural and historic attractions, including the futuristic Art Gallery of Alberta, the Royal Alberta Museum, Fort Edmonton Park, and the historic granite Alberta Legislature Building. But the city's biggest attraction is the ultimate shopping experience of West Edmonton Mall, one of the world's largest shopping and amusement complexes. Adding to the charm, the North Saskatchewan River Valley winding through the city has been largely preserved as greenbelt, with a cluster of modern glass-and-steel high-rises sitting on a bluff high above the river. Edmonton also boasts a good range of fine-dining restaurants, and a bustling nightlife centered on the historic streets of Old Strathcona.
