At the very southern tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria retains much of its stately British heritage, especially with afternoon tea at the historic Fairmont Empress Hotel, a local tradition. The influences of Native Peoples are apparent in the totem poles in Thunderbird Park and artwork sold in shops throughout the region. There's a small Chinatown here, too. Fan Tan Alley, once its gambling and opium center, is now home to boutiques and art galleries. Victorian mansions have been turned into museums, and you should plan to spend longer than you expected at the world-class history exhibits at the Royal British Columbia Museum.
