Overview
Lying offshore from Newfoundland's Kittiwake coast is Fogo Island, a remote destination far from the tourist path. Visitors who make the ferry crossing from the mainland to the island are rewarded with a slice of Newfoundland life that hasn’t changed in generations. Named “Fire Island” by the Portuguese for fires lit by resident Beothuk people, Fogo Island has only a couple of official attractions, including the architecturally striking studios of the Fogo Island Arts Corporation. Named “Fire Island” by the Portuguese for fires lit by resident Beothuk people, Fogo Island has only a couple of official attractions, including the architecturally striking studios of the Fogo Island Arts Corporation. From the ferry dock at Man-O-War Cove, it's a 40-minute drive around the island, passing 11 small communities, including the town of Fogo, which has a stunning oceanfront setting and is surrounded by water on all sides. The main island road ends at the village of Tilting, where a distinctive Irish flavor thrives. Nearby, Sandy Cove Beach is a real surprise — beautiful white sand that fills with locals on sunny summer days.
