Bearing the name of the famed salmon river that passes through it, Miramichi is a city formed from three towns and several villages in the mid 1990s. The Miramichi River gathers itself together from a number of small streams in the wilderness north of Frederickton and flows north through the center of the province and into Miramichi Bay on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Miramichi River gathers itself together from a number of small streams in the wilderness north of Frederickton and flows north through the center of the province and into Miramichi Bay on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Along the way it provides some of the finest salmon fishing in Canada. Famed baseball player and fisherman Ted Williams regularly fished here. Fishing must be done with a licensed guide. The river is also wonderful for paddling canoes or kayaks, with occasional small rapids and riffles that add zest to the experience. At the city of Miramichi visitors will find a number of activities related to the river and the sea, such as river cruises and tours to the Beaubears Island Interpretive Center, the most complete early shipbuilding site in eastern Canada. Ritchie’s Wharf park along the waterfront has a boardwalk and eating places. The long First Nations presence here is related at the Metepenagiag Heritage Centre, while visitors interested in the story of Scottish immigrants will find it at the Scottish Interpretive Centre. Miramichi hosts one of the world’s premier Irish music festivals each July.
